All urine samples are first screened through the process of an enzyme immunoassay test. This test merely determines whether or not the sample contains signs of substance abuse. It will pick up traces of marijuana, cocaine, opiates, PCP, amphetamines, methadone, and benzodiazepines. If there are any drugs presents in the specimen, an active enzyme will form which creates a change in color that can be detected with a sophisticated analysis tool. In the event that the enzyme immunoassay test results in a presumptive positive, another portion of the sample is then put through a LC/MS MS test.
Liquid chromatography mass spectrometry is a process that tests the purity and separates the components of each urine sample. Mass spectrometry is an analytical chemistry technique that tests for the amount and specific type of drugs in the sample. By sending the specimen through both processes, we are able to ensure highly accurate qualitative and quantitative results. An optional third process called liquid chromatography harmlessly separates a vast array of organic compounds.
